Neil Young - Life

Like Bob Dylan, Neil Young’s work from the 1980s tends to get
overlooked. This is a bit of a shame, as both artists at least
produced some worthwhile albums during the period. 1987’s Life
came after a period of consistently weak albums for Neil, the
worst of which being Landing on Water. It was also his first
album with Crazy Horse since 1981’s Re-ac-tor. On the surface,
Life is riddled with synthesizers and drum pads, but beneath the
production lurks a worthwhile, if uneven, album. Even at its
worst, it’s always hugely enjoyable. Around the World is a mess,
but such a glorious mess that it becomes likable. Elsewhere,
there are minor classics tucked away. Inca Queen may be trite,
but it is has such a beautiful melody that it’s hard to tire of.
However, Life is often so bad it becomes embarrassing - not
quite on a level with Landing on Water’s school choir choruses,
but getting there. Even so, if approached with caution, Life can
be very rewarding.
