Dirty.Circles - Dirty.Circles (self titled)

2 CD album; 1. Made with Paint 2. Outside Line

It's not often that you find modern albums dedicated to ambience that combines both psychedelia modern industrial noise and traditional ambience but Ashley man has managed to create something very special with this double album. There is a lovely organic feel to this CD through with many parts starting in the background and flowing in and out of the mix and many songs backing on to each other in a constant flow.

when I first got hold of this CD I thought each song was going to be an epic 8 minute long wankathon with horribly cheap sounding noises and 'extreme' sections of white noise as is standard practise with this type of music, Christ was I shocked. The main gentle soothing vibe of the two CD's is often contrasted at points by more 'white noise' industrial sounds and guitar samples but it all works really well with each other and obviously has been written as an album and singular piece of music rather that just a collection of songs.

'Staying home to watch the rain' is an imaginative piece of work that takes a number of subtle lines and attempts to try and capture the moment of inspiration derived from watching raindrops fall. This is an example of one of the more classic ambient pieces.

The mix of modern ambience and more classical sounds such as acoustic guitar and piano like sounds mean that although the album reads like one piece of ever flowing music there are some sections that you will find you are drawn to. This is the trick with albums of this nature as it means you can lose yourself in the music but still remember certain sections.

the two tracks which strike me the most off the first CD are 'Strangers Passing and 'Softly On.' The former relating much to a progressive sound and the second reminding me of the Dutch band 'The Gathering' both songs show signs of intelligence with the use of simulated strings mixing with delayed guitar and tabla like percussion.

the last track on the first CD is absolutely stunning the track sprawls itself out first fading in then out to the sound of waves breaking. This is possibly the most perfect chill out song I have ever come across and is reminiscent of the vibe captured on Morcheeeba's legendary album 'The big calm'.

The second CD 'Outside Line' opens in a minimalist style and travels along at a nice pace before introducing a dirtier guitar noise that changes the feel of the piece completely. Some of the other tracks on this CD such as 'Man reading' just build to fantastic climax and seem to go on building forever there is also more use of dirty guitars and tracks that echo rock tracks using sampled sounds.

These two disks are truly a testament to the imagination an musicianship found within our local scene and the sound is the audible equivalent to a bubble bath or moving in slow motion through clouds and I love it!

I recommend listening to it while either very stoned or undergoing a psychedelic experience but for those of you who are not that way inclined set up your speakers on either side of the room and allow it to surround you and you relax.
