Dilutral - PHI

Haunting passionate vocals, strong guitars, energy, well written songs, catchy choruses and a good vibe This CD has everything you're going to want in a rock band and it's not half bad at all.

Coming from a band albeit one from Southampton who have supported the likes of Zero Cipher and are set to go up against members of earthtone9 in a battle of the bands you were going to be expecting something good. Opening with a short build and straight into the meaty stuff not overly metal or rock in any moment on this CD built somewhat around the vocals but this is no bad thing.

The whispered first verse in 'Fifth Sun' is a surprise and shows a thread of subtlety that raises it's head every so often on this CD but don't worry these guys still know how to rock with the energy a constant point throughout. Overly wailed vocals that you either love or hate and strong ever changing drumming. 'Fifth Sun' itself features an absolutely fantastic chorus building up with the guitar to screams. While the second song 'Marionette' is treated with stop and start moments that almost go far enough to really grab your attention. Dual vocal barks and croons are also employed here and they sound great. The shouting is never overly done as is the wailing.

The whole album sounds smooth and fluid with some fantastic moments and changes from the haunting almost empty sections in the second song to the more abrasive sections all under some fantastic vocals.

The only problem is that the CD is somewhat flat and way too on the 'safe' side and it leaves you thinking that this band could be so much more if they took more risks to prevent their PHI album becoming background music with good twists. An unusual CD and a really good one at that but from a band who just need to branch out more.
